Rheinmetall's Teleoperated Shuttles Begin Practical Tests

German technology company Rheinmetall, through its subsidiary MIRA, is commencing practical tests of teleoperated shuttle vehicles on public roads on July 13, 2026. The initiative, a collaboration with transport operator Rheinbahn and Düsseldorf Airport, aims to gather operational experience and assess the technology's suitability under real-world conditions.

The area around Düsseldorf Airport was chosen for the tests due to its high traffic density and diverse mobility requirements. The shuttle vehicles will operate between the airport's train station and terminal areas. Key focus areas include the practicality of teleoperation in daily traffic, integration with existing transport structures, operational safety and system stability, as well as user and staff acceptance.

Annette Grabbe, Member of the Management Board at Rheinbahn, highlighted the role of teleoperation as a potential stepping stone towards more automated mobility services. "Public transport faces significant challenges. Therefore, we are specifically examining technologies that can help us shape mobility services reliably and economically in the long term," she stated. Win Neidlinger, CEO of MIRA GmbH, added that teleoperation can help maintain the performance of public transport despite a growing shortage of drivers.

Lars Redeligx, CEO of Düsseldorf Airport, noted the airport's existing experience with fully automated systems through its SkyTrain. He anticipates that teleoperated systems could enhance airport processes, not only for passenger transport but also for logistics and operations on the apron.

The tests are open to the public and free of charge. The shuttle vehicles will follow designated routes within the airport premises. The trial period concludes on August 28, 2026, with services running on weekdays during specified hours.
