Richard Branson calls for reform following record billionaire political spending

Virgin Group founder Richard Branson has described himself as embarrassed by the record-breaking political spending of fellow billionaires during the latest U.S. election cycle. In a public statement, Branson argued that the scale of financial influence from corporate and individual donors warrants a fresh legislative conversation regarding campaign finance reform.

Financial data from the Brennan Center for Justice indicates that the 40 largest donors contributed a combined $2.4 billion to campaigns as of mid-October. While historical trends showed Democratic-leaning donors holding greater influence in past cycles, this year saw Republican-aligned donors outspend their counterparts by a margin of more than three to one.

Elon Musk emerged as the cycle’s most significant individual donor, channeling nearly $500 million into Republican efforts. Despite this influx of capital, candidates supported by Musk experienced significant losses in both House and Senate races, suggesting a disconnect between large-scale financial backing and voter outcomes.

Branson highlighted these results as evidence that voters remain resistant to the influence of concentrated wealth. He expressed hope that the new Congress will prioritize the issue of campaign finance regulation to mitigate the perceived toxicity of money in politics.
