Richard Pedranti Architect (RPA) has completed the Lisk Residence, a high-performance luxury home in the Palencia community of St. Augustine, Florida. The design applies passive house principles and advanced building science to address the challenges of the region's climate, balancing a golf course orientation with views of coastal marshland.
The project originated from a decade-long vision by homeowners Greg and Alyse Lisk, who sought a design that maximized views while deviating from the area's typical architectural styles. RPA integrated features such as external solar shades on south and west elevations and high-efficiency glazing to manage solar gain and maintain comfort.
The residence features a U-shaped floor plan that separates public and private spaces and creates a sheltered courtyard. This layout utilizes the adjacent Intracoastal Waterway as a primary visual focus, replacing the function of a traditional great room. A rotation of the west wing directs the home toward the golf course, with two-story porches enhancing the connection to the landscape.
Construction, led by Cottage Home Company, involved sophisticated engineering to meet hurricane zone wind standards, requiring significant steel reinforcement due to the extensive use of glass. The 18-month project has become a benchmark for high-performance residential design in the Palencia community, demonstrating the successful integration of climate-responsive building science into regional aesthetics.
