Rittal Clarifies IK Rating for Enclosures

Rittal, a manufacturer of electrical enclosures, has issued a clarification regarding the IK rating, which defines the level of protection enclosures offer against external mechanical impacts. Damage from blows or impacts to these enclosures can impair the functionality of the equipment housed within, potentially rendering it inoperable.

Analogous to the IP rating, which indicates protection against dust and water, the IK rating addresses mechanical impact resistance. Rittal notes that laboratory testing, while standardized by IEC 62262, may not cover all critical points in real-world scenarios. The IK scale ranges from IK00 (no protection) to IK10 (highest protection), with each level corresponding to a specific impact energy.

Effective protection requires that a high IK rating does not compromise the enclosure's specified IP rating. Rittal emphasizes rigorous internal testing, particularly focusing on vulnerable areas like the enclosure's folded edges. These points are critical, as deformation can affect the seal integrity and thus the IP protection. The company utilizes advanced production technology to ensure its products meet these stringent quality and protection standards.
