Rittal Shifts Switchgear from Welded Frames to Modular Construction

Panel builders are increasingly adopting modular construction for low-voltage switchgear, moving away from decades-old welded steel frames. This shift addresses demands for faster project completion, enhanced flexibility, and easier future expansion in industrial, commercial, and data center applications.

Traditional welded frames offer rigidity but are difficult to modify once assembled. Modular systems utilize precision-engineered frames and standardized components that snap together. This approach allows for quicker assembly, shorter lead times, and improved dimensional accuracy compared to custom-welded structures.

Rittal supports this transition with its RiLineX busbar platform, designed for tool-free assembly with robust short-circuit protection. The Ri4Power system, built on the VX25 enclosure platform, scales up to 6300 A and allows for the assembly of tested, compliant complete switchgear systems.

Modular switchgear offers advantages such as simplified future expansion for new loads or renewable energy integration. It also reduces environmental impact through easier component replacement and manufacturing efficiencies. The platforms are designed to accommodate digital components for power monitoring and communication, reflecting the increasing digitalization of electrical infrastructure.
