Rivian-backed mobility startup Also moves to commercialize modular e-bike line
Former Rivian micromobility division Also is transitioning to an independent startup model as it prepares to bring its modular e-bike designs to market.

Also, a mobility startup formerly part of electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian, is finalizing the commercial launch of its TM-B electric bicycle. Operating now as an independent entity with Rivian maintaining a minority stake, the Palo Alto-based company aims to establish a foothold in the competitive personal electric transport sector.
Led by CEO Chris Yu, a Stanford aeronautics PhD and former Specialized executive, the company focuses on modular vehicle design. The TM-B features a swappable frame, USB-C battery charging, and a pedal-by-wire hybrid drivetrain. The company is also developing the TM-Q, an electric quadricycle, marking an expansion beyond two-wheeled transport.
The transition comes as the micromobility industry faces increased scrutiny regarding manufacturing scalability and profitability. By positioning itself as an independent firm, Also seeks to decouple its operational risks from those of its primary investor. The firm’s success now depends on its ability to transition from engineering prototypes to consistent, high-volume production for the consumer market.
