Rivian CEO: Physical AI to Reach 'Science Fiction' Moment by 2030

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe indicated at the Inc. 5000 Conference & Gala that physical AI, defined as machines capable of perceiving and interacting with the physical world, is poised to achieve its "science fiction" moment by the end of the decade. Scaringe stated that advancements in large AI models are drastically speeding up the development of robots that can perform complex tasks.

The CEO anticipates that by early 2030, capabilities previously confined to science fiction will become reality. This includes robots handling a wide range of tasks in manufacturing plants and the widespread adoption of self-driving vehicles capable of navigating complex environments like airport commutes.

These developments are being realized at Mind Robotics, an industrial robotics startup founded by Scaringe. The company is developing its own foundation models to power robots for manufacturing applications such as parts sorting and assembly, with Rivian serving as its first customer.

Mind Robotics has secured over $1 billion in funding and appointed former Ford, Tesla, and Apple executive Doug Field as its president. Scaringe's predictions align with a broader industry trend, as companies like Tesla, Figure AI, and Boston Dynamics are actively developing advanced robots for physical tasks.
