Rivian Expands Battery Recycling and Reuse Partnership with Redwood Materials

Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian is strengthening its partnership with battery circularity company Redwood Materials. The expanded collaboration focuses on recycling and reusing Rivian's end-of-life EV batteries for energy storage solutions.

Under the new agreement, Rivian can supply its retired battery packs to Redwood Materials for either recycling or for use in second-life energy storage projects. This builds upon an existing deal where the companies previously established a 10-megawatt-hour energy storage micro-grid at Rivian's Illinois production facility.

Redwood Materials founder and CEO JB Straubel stated that each Rivian battery pack returned represents a potential source of domestic grid energy storage and critical materials. Rivian can be compensated for the remaining value of the batteries, either through recycling or their value in energy storage applications.

Rivian representatives highlighted that these end-of-life EV batteries can support the grid cost-effectively and quickly. This is particularly relevant as U.S. power demand is projected to reach record highs, driven partly by the growth in AI.
