Rivian expands focus beyond electric vehicle manufacturing

Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian is aiming to redefine itself as more than just a car maker. Over the past year, the company has significantly deepened its vertical integration, with a strong focus on artificial intelligence, advanced driving systems, and proprietary hardware development.

Rivian has developed its own AI models to power its in-vehicle assistant. Additionally, it is building an end-to-end automated driving stack in partnership with Uber for both its passenger vehicles and future robotaxi services. The company is also developing its own 5 nm processor in collaboration with Arm and TSMC.

These initiatives underscore Rivian's ambition to control its entire technology stack, from hardware to software and AI. CEO RJ Scaringe has previously stated his desire for Rivian to become a significant player in other areas of mobility as well.

The company's broader ambitions are further illustrated by its $5.8 billion joint venture with Volkswagen Group, focused on electric vehicle architecture and software. This strategic move strengthens Rivian's position in the evolving automotive landscape.
