Rivian pivots focus toward autonomous driving development
Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe has signaled a strategic shift toward autonomous vehicle technology, setting the stage for a hands-free driving rollout starting in 2026.

During its latest earnings report, Rivian management emphasized the company's commitment to autonomous driving features. The electric vehicle manufacturer intends to initiate internal validation of a point-to-point, hands-free driving system in 2026, with a wider customer release scheduled for 2027.
This transition serves as a foundation for a partnership with Uber, with plans to deploy autonomous robotaxis by 2028. The shift in focus arrives as Rivian continues to navigate the manufacturing ramp-up of its R2 SUV model at its facility in Normal, Illinois.
The next two years represent a critical period for Rivian as it attempts to move beyond core vehicle production to become a software-defined automotive competitor. Whether the company can execute this transition while meeting production targets remains a significant test for its business model.
