Rivian R2 Balances Affordability and Adventure in New EV
Rivian has launched its new R2 electric vehicle, aiming for a more affordable price point without compromising on quality or adventure capabilities. The focus is on improved driving experience and thoughtful design.

Rivian has introduced its new R2 electric SUV, designed to offer a more accessible price point while maintaining the brand's focus on adventure and user experience. The company has worked to balance enhanced features with reduced manufacturing costs, incorporating customer feedback into the design process.
Key design elements include the "Halo" haptic controls on the steering wheel, a response to customer demand for physical buttons. Despite adding cost, Rivian prioritized these for user experience and differentiation. The R2 aims to be significantly more affordable than Rivian's initial R1S, with the performance version starting at $57,990 and a more basic model planned for $44,990 in early 2027.
The R2 arrives at a challenging time for the EV market, with new vehicle sales slowing after federal incentives ended. For Rivian, which achieved its first gross profit last year after a substantial IPO, the R2 represents a crucial step in expanding its market reach. The vehicle is engineered to appeal to a broader audience by offering a compelling driving experience at a lower price.
Weight reduction and cost efficiency were central to the R2's development. This included reducing wiring by adopting a "zonal" architecture and optimizing the battery pack for structural rigidity. A notable feature is the rear window that fully retracts, an engineering feat intended to enhance the vehicle's adventurous appeal. These changes aim to decrease weight and manufacturing expenses.
On the road and off, the R2 demonstrates capable performance, leveraging the instant torque of its electric drivetrain and offering substantial ground clearance. It also features advanced driver-assistance systems, including hands-free driving capabilities. The R2's combination of revised engineering, new features, and a more accessible price aims to make it a competitive offering in the electric SUV segment.
