Rivian Recalls R2 SUVs Over Loose Battery Pack Fasteners

Automaker Rivian has issued a recall for its R2 electric SUV after discovering that fasteners for the high-voltage battery pack may not have been properly tightened. According to the company, this defect could result in a loss of power while the vehicle is in operation.

The recall affects an estimated 14 vehicles. Rivian stated that it will repair or replace any affected components on customer vehicles as necessary. The company first identified the issue on September 17 at its factory in Normal, Illinois, when a manufacturing operator noticed an automated station had undertightened a fastener.

Rivian has reprogrammed the assembly line station to reject improperly torqued fasteners. The company reports it is not aware of any customer reports, accidents, injuries, or fatalities related to this issue.

This marks the second recall for the R2 model, which began customer deliveries this year. The R2 is a critical vehicle for Rivian, intended as the company's first mass-market EV and a key factor in achieving profitability. A previous recall addressed visibility issues with the backup camera via a software update.
