Rivian sues US government over Trump-era tariffs

Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian has sued the U.S. government in an effort to reclaim a "full refund" on tariffs paid under former President Donald Trump's administration, which were later ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.

The automaker joins a growing list of companies seeking similar refunds. In April, Rivian CFO Claire McDonough stated that the company expected to receive a refund in the "tens of millions of dollars."

Rivian's legal action comes as the company is beginning to roll out its first mass-market SUV, the R2. Rivian expects to ship approximately 20,000 to 25,000 units by the end of the year, a move intended to help the company reach profitability.

However, achieving profitability might be delayed until 2028, as Rivian is investing heavily in the development of autonomous vehicles. The company recently raised around $1.3 billion through a stock sale to bolster its cash reserves.
