Road Traffic Noise Linked to Increased Parkinson's Disease Risk
A large-scale Danish study found a significant association between long-term exposure to road traffic noise and an increased risk of Parkinson's disease. The study analyzed over 3.1 million adults.

A comprehensive study conducted in Denmark has identified a notable link between prolonged exposure to road traffic noise and a higher risk of developing Parkinson's disease. The research, considered one of the largest of its kind, involved over 3.1 million adult residents.
The 18-year study, published in JAMA Neurology, tracked individuals aged 40 and older. It revealed that for every 11.5-decibel increase in traffic noise measured at the facade of their homes, participants faced a 3 percent elevated risk of Parkinson's. Typical residential street noise ranges from 40 to 60 decibels, while busy roads can reach 70 decibels or more.
Researchers observed that long-term exposure to traffic noise was associated with increased Parkinson's risk. However, they noted that this association was mitigated when one side of the residence was quieter. This suggests that the level of noise exposure, rather than just proximity to a road, is a key factor.
The findings remained consistent across various demographic and socioeconomic groups, including differences in sex, income, education, and population density. The study authors concluded that traffic noise might represent a novel risk factor for Parkinson's disease, underscoring the importance of strategies that promote quiet residential environments.
