Roblox is shutting down its video chat service

Roblox Corporation is shutting down its video calling service, Roblox Connect, which was launched in 2023. The service allowed users to conduct video calls using their Roblox avatar, which could mimic the user's real-life movements. Users could also move around together in a shared virtual environment during calls.

According to the company, users aged 13 and older "predominantly" use the platform's party voice chat functionality for calls. "Roblox Connect is being discontinued today, including both the developer-facing APIs and the Roblox Connect feature itself," confirmed Roblox spokesperson Angela Allison.

The decision to discontinue the service appears to stem from shifts in user communication preferences on the platform. Roblox's development resources are likely being redirected to other features that better serve the platform's core user base. The company has not commented on whether a new, similar feature will replace Connect in the future.

The shutdown of Roblox Connect reflects platforms' efforts to adapt to user needs and technological advancements. While the service offered novel ways to interact virtually, its adoption may have been limited compared to other communication methods.
