Roblox launches AI-powered game creation feature in mobile app

Roblox announced on Thursday a new feature called “Build,” enabling users to design games from their mobile devices using artificial intelligence.

The Build feature allows users to turn simple text prompts into a basic game without requiring programming experience. For instance, a prompt like “Let’s make a cozy adventure game set in a dense forest” will generate an initial game version that users can then modify and share.

The AI, powered by a combination of open-source and proprietary Roblox models, handles gameplay mechanics, environment, characters, visual style, and sound. This development aligns with similar tools being built by major tech companies such as Google and Microsoft.

However, AI-powered game generation has raised concerns among developers and players. Critics argue that lowering the barrier to game development through text prompts could lead to an influx of low-quality and repetitive games. Roblox plans to address this by ranking AI-generated games based on player retention, similar to its existing system for other games on the platform.

The Build feature will enter public alpha testing on July 28, initially available to verified users aged nine and older in New Zealand. Users aged 16 and up will have the opportunity to publish their creations globally.
