Robot measures vital signs in concussion patients

The Fraunhofer Institute for Production Engineering and Automation (IPA) has developed a robot named Helga designed to measure critical vital signs in young patients diagnosed with a concussion. This new technology aims to alleviate the burden on healthcare staff, as children with concussions require intensive monitoring, often hourly.

Helga autonomously navigates to the patient's bedside and interacts with children to perform standardized tests. These tests assess the patient's motor and verbal responses to ensure they remain responsive. Additionally, the robot monitors key vital signs such as pulse and pupil reactions, and prompts patients to rate their pain levels.

The robot's implementation was proposed by a clinic that identified the task as highly staff-intensive yet relatively low-risk. The robot's autonomy significantly reduces the workload for existing personnel, allowing resources to be reallocated to more critical duties.

Automating pupil measurement presented a significant technical challenge. The robot employs an advanced sensor setup and image processing to accurately measure pupil size and reactions, even under difficult conditions such as varying eye colors. Vital sign measurement is also conducted non-invasively by analyzing color changes in the face as blood pulsates.

To ensure patient cooperation, especially among children, playful elements have been integrated into the measurements. The robot utilizes interactive animations and games to help keep children still and focused, thereby improving the accuracy of the readings and the overall patient experience.
