Robotic Surgery Combines Breast Cancer Treatment and Reconstruction in One Procedure

Surgeons at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital have implemented a new robotic-assisted technique that integrates breast cancer treatment, reconstruction, biopsy, and nerve preservation into a single surgical procedure. Utilizing the da Vinci SP® (Single Port) robotic system, the approach involves a single, four-centimeter incision concealed in the natural fold beneath the breast, aiming to reduce pain, speed recovery, and minimize scarring.

The procedure allows for the removal of cancerous tissue, placement of breast implants, sentinel lymph node biopsy, and nerve-sparing techniques to preserve sensation, all performed concurrently. A recent patient, a 50-year-old woman with early-stage breast cancer, underwent a bilateral nipple-sparing mastectomy followed by implant reconstruction. She reportedly experienced a swift recovery and returned home the same day.

Dr. Lucy De La Cruz, chief of Breast Surgery at MedStar Georgetown, highlighted the benefits, stating, "One incision. One surgery. My patient woke up with her cancer treated and a scar she'll barely see. Just hours later, she was back home recovering with her family." She noted the approach allows patients to achieve cancer treatment, reconstruction, lymph node assessment, and sensation preservation within one minimally invasive robotic operation.

This robotic technique is best suited for specific patients with small to moderate-sized breasts, healthy weight, and appropriately positioned nipples. It is not recommended for individuals with larger or sagging breasts or those with inflammatory breast cancer. MedStar Georgetown is one of only ten hospitals nationwide performing nipple-sparing mastectomies with the da Vinci Single-Port system and the only facility in the Washington D.C. region offering this specific procedure. The hospital anticipates improved patient outcomes and experiences with this advanced method for eligible candidates.
