A growing number of surgeons are employing Intuitive's da Vinci robotic systems for emergency surgical procedures, challenging the previous notion that robotic surgery is unsuitable for urgent care. This trend is enabling more patients to benefit from minimally invasive approaches, potentially leading to fewer complications and faster recovery times than traditional open surgery.

Surgeons like Dr. Andrea Pakula at Adventist Health Hospital have found the da Vinci system to be effective in acute care settings. Dr. Pakula stated that robotic-assisted procedures have expanded the availability of minimally invasive surgery to patients presenting in the emergency room. She emphasizes that with proper planning, the robotic system can support a 24/7 emergency surgery service.

Dr. Laila Rashidi at Multicare Hospital analyzed outcomes from robotic surgeries, finding that emergency diverticulitis cases performed robotically had significantly lower rates of ICU admission and post-surgical intestinal leaks compared to open surgery. She used this data to advocate for and successfully expand her hospital's robotic program to offer 24/7 availability.

These efforts have led to expanded robotic surgery programs, with multiple da Vinci systems now in place to accommodate emergency cases. The goal is to integrate robotic surgery as a standard option within acute care. The use of data to demonstrate benefits has been crucial in gaining institutional support for these advancements.
