Roche's Experimental Drug Shows Sustained Weight Loss and Blood Sugar Control

Roche Pharmaceuticals has announced encouraging results from a clinical trial evaluating its experimental drug, enicepatide. The once-weekly injectable treatment showed sustained efficacy in reducing both body weight and blood glucose levels in 447 adults living with type 2 diabetes and obesity for a period of 48 weeks.

The study found that patients receiving the highest dosage, 24 mg, achieved a mean weight loss of 15.5 percent. Furthermore, their HbA1c levels, a measure of long-term blood glucose control, decreased by an average of 2.65 percentage points. For patients with poorly controlled baseline glucose levels (above 8.5 percent), the HbA1c reduction was even more pronounced, averaging 4.13 percentage points.

By the end of the 48-week period, 90 percent of participants in the 24 mg cohort met the glycemic target of less than or equal to 6.5 percent HbA1c, with 62 percent achieving normoglycemia (below 5.7 percent). Enicepatide functions as a dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist, targeting appetite regulation and insulin secretion.

Treatment discontinuation due to adverse events was low, with only 2 percent of patients stopping due to mild to moderate gastrointestinal issues. Roche indicated its intent to advance the development of enicepatide for individuals with obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
