Rocket Lab Delays Neutron Rocket Debut to 2027

Rocket Lab announced Wednesday that its Neutron launch vehicle's first flight has been postponed until 2027. The delay is attributed to a problem discovered during the manufacturing of the rocket's carbon composite structures.

The announcement confirms expectations that had become common within the space industry. Rocket Lab's last official update in August suggested the company still hoped to have the first Neutron rocket ready for its launch pad in Wallops Island, Virginia, before the end of this year. However, that schedule would likely have pushed the maiden flight into 2027 regardless.

Wednesday's statement indicates that Rocket Lab is still encountering difficulties in producing the rocket's large booster stage. Neutron's reusable first stage is constructed from carbon composite materials, valued for their low weight, high strength, and corrosion resistance. However, manufacturing carbon composites for aerospace applications is generally more complex than working with metallic structures.

Rocket Lab has previously achieved success with launches of its smaller Electron rockets. The Neutron rocket is intended to enable the delivery of larger payloads to space, a key element of the company's expansion strategy.
