Rockstar Games Co-Founder Supports Physical Game Discs
Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, has stated that game publishers should continue to offer physical copies of games, even as digital distribution becomes more prevalent. His comments come amidst ongoing debate about the future of physical media in gaming.

Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, has voiced his support for the continued availability of physical game discs, asserting that publishers should cater to player demand for physical media despite the industry's shift towards digital distribution.
Houser's remarks follow Sony's recent announcement that it will cease physical game disc releases for PlayStation consoles starting January 2028. This decision has sparked considerable debate among gamers, with many expressing their preference for physical copies on social media platforms.
Houser, who co-founded Rockstar Games and departed in early 2020, was instrumental in the development of titles such as the Grand Theft Auto series, Red Dead Redemption, Bully, and Max Payne 3. While he personally professes no strong attachment to physical discs, he believes consumer preference should guide industry offerings.
"If the player wants it, the company should provide it," Houser stated, acknowledging the benefits of digital distribution, such as continuous updates and bug fixes that can enhance game quality. However, he ultimately deferred to player demand.
Other industry figures, like former GTA radio writer and host Lazlow Jones, have highlighted the distinct appeal of both physical ownership and digital convenience. Jones noted the unique satisfaction of inserting a disc into a console while also appreciating the ease of downloading games on the go for long trips.
