Rohde & Schwarz addresses evolving drone threats with advanced detection systems
Rohde & Schwarz evaluates the security challenges posed by modern unmanned aerial systems, emphasizing the need for advanced detection and counter-measure technologies.

Technology firm Rohde & Schwarz has highlighted the security challenges posed by the rapid evolution of unmanned aerial systems (UAS). As commercial drones increasingly adopt artificial intelligence, autonomous navigation, and swarm capabilities, the firm warns that conventional defense systems are becoming less effective at securing critical infrastructure.
Martin Woywod, product manager for Counter-UAS systems at Rohde & Schwarz, noted that the proliferation of low-cost, high-performance drones has fundamentally altered the threat landscape. Because modern drones can utilize stealth capabilities and advanced wireless protocols, they are harder to track using traditional radar alone, creating urgent demand for more sophisticated surveillance.
The development of counter-drone technology has transitioned toward multi-sensor integration, leveraging radio frequency (RF) sensors alongside machine learning. These systems are designed to detect unique signal signatures, allowing operators to identify drone types and predict behavior patterns before a breach occurs. This analytical approach is considered critical for responding to non-cooperative aerial threats in real time.
Moving forward, the industry is focusing on integrating electronic countermeasures—such as RF interference—with detection platforms. For government agencies and operators of sensitive sites, the ability to rapidly identify and neutralize autonomous threats remains a primary focus of modern security investments.
