Munich โ€“ September 5, 2023 โ€“ Rohde & Schwarz, a provider of test and measurement equipment, and French technology company Greenerwave have partnered to evaluate novel metamaterial-based Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) modules. The collaboration focused on measuring the characteristics of Greenerwave's FR2 RIS module using Rohde & Schwarz's antenna test systems.

RIS technology is considered a key enabler for future 6G networks and is expected to play a significant role in improving the efficiency and coverage of current 5G networks, particularly in the frequency range above 24 GHz (FR2). Recent measurements have confirmed for the first time in a real-world scenario that a metamaterial-based RIS can enhance wireless communication performance.

The measurements were conducted in Rohde & Schwarz's Wireless Performance Test Chamber (WPTC) and utilized advanced equipment including the R&S ZVA vector network analyzer, R&S SMW200A vector signal generator, and R&S FSW signal and spectrum analyzer. The R&S AMS32 software automated the measurement process and data analysis.

Greenerwave's RIS module employs proprietary metamaterial technology that allows for more effective control and steering of radio frequency signals. The results of this collaboration represent a significant step towards the commercialization of RIS technology and leveraging its potential in 5G networks and future 6G solutions. Both companies are active members of industry standardization bodies, including one6G and ETSI ISG RIS.
