Rohde & Schwarz Demonstrates 5G Broadcast is Revenue-Ready
Rohde & Schwarz will showcase a complete 5G Broadcast ecosystem at Mobile World Congress 2024, positioning it as ready for commercial rollout and new revenue streams for broadcasters and network operators.

Rohde & Schwarz is set to demonstrate a comprehensive 5G Broadcast ecosystem at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 in Barcelona. The company asserts that the technology is now ready for commercial deployment, offering new revenue opportunities for both broadcasters and network operators.
The 5G Broadcast standard, part of 3GPP specifications, enables one-to-many transmissions. It is designed for delivering live content, such as event-specific channels, to a large number of mobile devices simultaneously without requiring a SIM card. Beyond media, the standard supports data broadcasting, facilitating updates for Internet of Things (IoT) devices and automotive applications.
Rohde & Schwarz has actively participated in the standardization of 5G Broadcast through collaborations with bodies like ETSI JTC Broadcast and 5G-MAG. This involvement has led to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) endorsing 5G Broadcast as a global next-generation terrestrial broadcasting standard, promoting efficient use of the UHF spectrum.
Following extensive real-world demonstrations, Rohde & Schwarz claims the end-to-end solution is finalized and attracting significant global interest. "For network operators, adding 5G Broadcast is a simple upgrade to existing Rohde & Schwarz transmitters," stated Thomas Janner, Director of R&D Broadcast Applications at Rohde & Schwarz. "For the first time, there is a practical, economical route to achieve true mobile television, further enhancing the cellular proposition without adding to network congestion. Additionally, there are huge opportunities for data delivery services, even in parallel to television broadcasting," he added. "These data services come at a time when delivery to automotive and IoT is desperately needed, and 5G Broadcast is ready to capture these new revenue streams, making it a win-win across the board."
The MWC presentation will illustrate the readiness of the entire ecosystem, highlighting collaborations with industry partners and standardization bodies. Rohde & Schwarz will be present at stand 5A80 during the event.
