Research firm Roots Analysis has identified eight leading gene editing companies based in the United States. The selection criteria focused on companies that have raised significant capital, with a minimum threshold of USD 490 million. The report, titled "Top Gene Editing Companies," was published in April 2024.
Gene editing technologies, particularly CRISPR-Cas9, have revolutionized medical research, enabling the development of novel treatments for genetic disorders. Globally, over 1,000 cell and gene therapy candidates are currently under investigation, driving demand for efficient gene editing tools.
The study analyzed over 110 gene editing companies. The eight top-ranked firms highlighted are Arcturus Therapeutics, Beam Therapeutics, Caribou Biosciences, Century Therapeutics, CRISPR Therapeutics, Editas Medicine, Intellia Therapeutics, and Prime Medicine. These companies aim to correct genetic abnormalities in conditions such as sickle cell disease, Parkinson's disease, and spinal muscular atrophy.
The report also emphasizes the role of gene editing in prophylactic treatments and the development of newer techniques like base editing and prime editing to complement traditional CRISPR methods. The field is expected to experience substantial growth, fueled by promising clinical trial results and regulatory approvals.
