Rosetta Stone reinvents language learning for mobile era

Rosetta Stone, a long-standing name in language education, is updating its core offering for the smartphone era with the release of Rosetta Stone Sapphire. The company, founded in 1992 and previously known for its CD-ROM software, has transitioned to digital and subscription models, and now aims to reinvent its approach for mobile users.

Launched in 2026, Sapphire emphasizes a mobile-first experience, designed to align with how people use their devices today. Senior product manager Ansh Juneja stated that the new version leverages trends in app development, including a heavy reliance on images and video, mirroring Rosetta Stone's approach to teaching practical language use.

The subscription-based software includes AI-powered features like "Chat Missions," allowing users to practice language in simulated scenarios such as making restaurant reservations or navigating professional meetings. Hundreds of topical digital flashcards are also available for quick study sessions. The interface has been simplified for mobile use, facilitating progression through lessons with minimal navigation.

While these updates may appeal to users of newer apps like Duolingo, Juneja emphasized that Rosetta Stone remains a premium product for those seeking immersive study. Acquired by IXL Learning in 2021, the company focuses on effective learning experiences. Features like the TruAccent pronunciation tool and access to all 25 languages are retained, along with live tutor sessions.

Rosetta Stone has reported an uptick in signups and usage since Sapphire's launch, though specific figures were not disclosed. The company views its service as a lifelong support for learners and has also introduced customization options through its Sapphire Studio feature.
