A research team at RTI International has developed a new metric to track adverse health outcomes among patients beginning opioid treatment. The measure monitors the frequency of hospital visits related to substance use within 90 days of admission, providing a clearer picture of patient stability during the critical early stages of recovery.

In a study analyzing data from 1,226 treatment centers across the United States, researchers identified a median 90-day acute care rate of 5%. However, the findings revealed significant disparities in outcomes across different facilities, suggesting that clinical performance varies widely within the current treatment landscape.

Public health experts note that tracking these post-admission events is essential for quality improvement in addiction medicine. By identifying which programs have higher rates of emergency care utilization, policymakers and providers can better target resources to improve patient retention and safety.
