Farnborough, UK – July 22, 2026 – Collins Aerospace, an RTX business, has completed integrated laboratory testing for the European Union's Clean Aviation SWITCH project. The testing was conducted at The Grid, Collins Aerospace's advanced electric power systems lab in Rockford, Illinois.

The project aims to improve engine efficiency for future short- and medium-range aircraft by integrating hybrid-electric systems onto a Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engine. Collins Aerospace supplied megawatt-class motor generators and controllers that were successfully operated with simulated aircraft and engine systems.

These hybrid-electric powertrain subsystems will now move to Airbus's laboratories for further aircraft-level integration testing. This phase will include work on aircraft design, battery interfacing, and energy management systems. Collins Aerospace stated these were the largest integrated systems tests conducted at The Grid since its opening in 2023.

Following the SWITCH project, The Grid lab will support the Airbus-led LEIA (Large scalE Integration demonstrator of hybrid electrical Architecture) project. Collins Aerospace will serve as the technical lead for energy sources in LEIA, a Clean Aviation demonstrator advancing components and systems for future hybrid-electric short- and medium-range aircraft.
