Rubrik Highlights Evolving Cyber Threats and Need for Rapid Recovery

Cybersecurity solutions provider Rubrik has released an analysis highlighting the inadequacy of traditional data backups against today's rapidly evolving cyber threats. The company notes that attackers are increasingly targeting organizations' identity systems and even their backups, complicating data recovery after a disaster.

According to the report, the mere existence of backups does not guarantee recovery if the backup systems themselves have been compromised. "Cyber resilience is now critical," states Ananth Nag, Vice President for APAC at Rubrik. He stresses that beyond simply creating copies of data, organizations must ensure they can identify a clean, trusted recovery point and restore operations quickly, even during an ongoing attack.

Nag also points out risks associated with handling sensitive data in AI pipelines without adequate safeguards. Research indicates that many organizations lack a full understanding of their data's location or who or what can access it. This data governance gap can lead to sensitive personal or health information ending up in AI training data unknowingly.

Furthermore, Rubrik underscores the importance of the identity layer. As attackers frequently target administrative credentials, companies must redefine their access controls. Nag suggests organizations adopt an "assume breach" mindset and ensure identity systems are recoverable from a trusted, clean state, even if administrative accounts are compromised. This necessitates, among other measures, immutable and air-gapped backups of identity systems.
