Russell Wilson Discusses Business Leadership Strategies
Former NFL quarterback Russell Wilson shared insights on transitioning his leadership approach from professional football to the business world at the Fast Company Innovation Festival.
Russell Wilson, known for his NFL career, has applied lessons learned on the football field to his ventures in entrepreneurship and broadcasting. Wilson spoke at the Fast Company Innovation Festival in New York on Wednesday about his leadership philosophy.
Having led the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl victory in 2014, Wilson discussed how his approach to leading a business team differs from that of a football team. While maintaining an intense work ethic, he emphasized a focus on uplifting and inspiring individuals within his companies.
"I believe that we can uplift each other and inspire each other and still motivate each other, and still encourage each other and still do well," Wilson stated. He contrasted this with what he described as a sometimes more self-centered dynamic in professional sports.
Wilsons leadership strategy centers on valuing individuals, citing his former coach Pete Carroll's approach of caring about each player. This, he explained, fosters an environment where team members are more willing to make sacrifices and go the extra mile.
Beyond his broadcasting role with CBS Sports and the NFL Today, Wilson founded the brand management company West2East Empire and is involved with the "Why Not You?" initiative. He is also an owner of the Seattle Sounders soccer club.
