Russian Drone Attacks Breach NATO Territorial Waters
Russian drone attacks near the Black Sea have entered NATO member Romania's territorial waters, sinking a cargo ship and setting chemical tankers ablaze. The incidents prompt renewed calls for enhanced NATO counter-drone measures.

Russian drone attacks in the Black Sea region have reportedly breached the territorial waters of NATO member Romania, marking a significant escalation. The incidents, occurring between October 14 and 15, involved the suspected sinking of a cargo ship and the ignition of two chemical tankers.
These attacks have raised concerns due to their proximity to critical shipping routes. The chemical tankers were anchored near the Sulina Canal, a vital connection between the Black Sea and the Danube River, which is essential for Ukrainian exports. At least seven vessels have now been targeted within NATO exclusive economic zones, with these latest events potentially extending into Romania's sovereign waters.
The repeated drone activity has intensified demands for NATO to bolster its defenses. Following meetings with the leaders of Bulgaria and Romania, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte indicated on October 15 that the alliance had already reinforced "counter-drone capabilities" along its eastern flank.
The full extent of Russian involvement in the tanker incidents is still under confirmation. However, the proximity of the attacks to NATO territory underscores ongoing regional security challenges.
