Ruukki supplies sandwich panels with low-carbon steel for new AWS data center in Sweden

Ruukki Construction is set to supply sandwich panels manufactured with SSAB's low-carbon steel for Amazon Web Services' new data center in Sweden. This delivery is part of an ongoing collaboration agreement between SSAB and AWS aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of data center construction.

The delivery includes Ruukki® Life LowCarbon sandwich panels, which will form part of the facade for new data center buildings in Eskilstuna, Katrineholm, and Västerås. This pilot project utilizes SSAB's developed low-carbon steel, which significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions compared to traditional steel production methods.

AWS has established a goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in its operations by 2040. According to the company, close collaboration with firms like SSAB and Ruukki is crucial for reducing emissions associated with data center materials and establishing sustainable infrastructure standards.

Ruukki introduced its LowCarbon product offering in May 2024. This range features high-quality building products made from recycled steel and finished with a bio-based coating. The company plans to expand this offering in the future to include products made with SSAB's fossil-free steel.
