R+V: Contract Disputes Most Common Reason for Legal Action in 2023

R+V Versicherung AG, a major German insurer, has released its analysis of the most common reasons for legal disputes in 2023. Data from its legal protection insurance policies shows that contract-related disagreements were the predominant cause for litigation.

Disputes concerning contracts accounted for over a quarter (26 percent) of cases where individuals utilized R+V's legal protection services. These typically involved issues arising from car purchase agreements, mobile phone provider contracts, or travel arrangements.

Compensation claims ranked as the second most frequent reason, making up 18 percent of cases. Examples cited include arguments over repair costs following car accidents or disputes over the amount of damages for personal injury. Employment law issues were the third most common category at 13 percent, often involving warnings, dismissals, or disagreements over job references.

The fourth most frequent cause, also at 13 percent, involved traffic violations and related criminal matters, such as speeding, failure to yield, or investigations following serious accidents. Issues related to real estate, including rent increase disputes, utility billing problems, or neighborly conflicts, constituted the fifth most common reason (10 percent).

According to R+V, the 2023 figures align with trends from previous years. The company noted that the COVID-19 pandemic had previously led to a significant increase in demand for legal advice, particularly concerning canceled travel plans or government-arranged repatriations from high-risk areas.
