R+V Insurance Identifies Seven Common Misconceptions About Long-Term Care

R+V Versicherung AG, a German insurance provider, has shed light on common misconceptions surrounding the necessity and implications of long-term care. The firm's findings suggest a significant gap between public perception and statistical reality concerning care needs and their financial impact.

Statistics indicate that the likelihood of requiring care increases with age, and women, due to their longer life expectancy, are disproportionately affected. The insurer noted that approximately two-thirds of individuals needing care are women, and many of these women also undertake the care of family members, often at the expense of their own professional or personal pursuits.

A primary misconception identified by R+V is the belief that one will not become dependent on care. Contrary to this, statistics show that about half of men and three-quarters of women will require some form of care during their lifetime. Furthermore, the notion of not needing care until old age is challenged, with data showing that one in six individuals needing care are under the age of 65.

The insurer also emphasizes that the duration of care needs can be substantial, often spanning several years or even decades. The average duration for home care is cited at 8.2 years. Many women find themselves providing care for between 3 to 10 years, or even longer, effectively working a second job. R+V points out that statutory insurance often provides only partial coverage, necessitating private supplementary insurance or savings to bridge the financial gap.
