R+V Insurance: New Pets Require Preparation and Patience

German insurer R+V Versicherung AG has released guidelines for successfully welcoming new pets into homes. The company stresses that bringing a new animal, whether a puppy, kitten, or small rodent, into the household requires careful planning and preparation.

"The choice of a new family member should be deliberate and well-planned," stated Stefanie Simon, an expert at R+V-Infocenter. Before acquiring a new pet, it's crucial to ensure no household members have allergies, that the landlord permits pets, and that the family has adequate time for the animal. Arrangements for pet care during vacations should also be made in advance.

Once these fundamental aspects are addressed, it's time to gather necessary supplies. Every pet needs its own resting place, toys, food bowl, and food. Removing poisonous plants and exposed electrical cords from the home is vital for the pet's safety. Simon highlights the importance of patience during the pet's first days in its new surroundings. Animals may need time to adjust, and it's advisable to give them a few days of quiet before inviting visitors.

Small animals, such as rodents, may adapt without significant issues but can be shy initially. It's important to allow them to get used to people gradually and avoid disturbing them, for example, by reaching into their cage. The sleep-wake cycles of nocturnal animals, like hamsters, should also be respected. Regarding cats, R+V expert Simon notes their independence, with cats deciding when they wish to play. For dog owners, Simon recommends taking at least a few weeks off work to acclimate puppies, as they require intensive training and socialization. In Germany, dog owners must also pay a dog tax, and some states mandate liability insurance for dogs.

R+V Versicherung AG also underscores the importance of pet identification. Microchipping or ear tattooing, coupled with registration with organizations like TASSO e.V., facilitates the reunion of lost pets with their owners.
