S-Bahn Berlin, Siemens and Stadler win major contract for new trains and services

S-Bahn Berlin, Siemens Mobility, and Stadler Deutschland have been awarded a significant contract set to modernize the German capital's urban rail system. The legally binding agreement includes the delivery of 350 new four-car, fully walk-through trains.

The contract also encompasses 30 years of fleet maintenance and 15 years of operational responsibility for the North-South and Stadtbahn sub-networks. This comprehensive deal aims to establish a high-performance and customer-focused mobility system for the Berlin-Brandenburg region.

The new trains will be based on the latest Siemens and Stadler vehicle series already in use on Berlin's Ringbahn. Enhancements will include a modern driver's cab, improved fire protection, cybersecurity measures, greater energy efficiency, and increased passenger comfort features like USB-C charging ports.

Siemens Mobility's Railigent X platform will be utilized for predictive, data-driven maintenance and real-time fleet monitoring, aiming to optimize upkeep and maximize availability. The contract is expected to support thousands of jobs and bolster regional economic value creation across Germany.
