Saab Delivers Automatic Test Station to South Africa

Swedish defense company Saab Aerotech is set to deliver an advanced automatic test station (ATS) to South Africa. The equipment is designated for testing components used in the country's Gripen fighter jet program. The contract requires Saab Aerotech to expand its workforce at its Arboga facility.

The RSA 48 test station, as it will be known, is based on technology previously developed by Saab Aerotech for Sweden's own Gripen aircraft. However, the South African version will feature a broader scope, capable of testing over 30 different types of Gripen equipment. This includes critical systems such as the autopilot and the inertial navigation system, as well as electronic presentation equipment.

The complete test station is scheduled for delivery in 2009. Saab Aerotech will collaborate with Saab Logtronics in South Africa, which will be responsible for assembling the station and manufacturing necessary adapters. Saab Aerotech retains responsibility for the overall design and construction, along with the development of approximately 30 test programs.

The project will involve approximately 20 employees within Saab Aerotech's Avionics and Test Solutions division. Company officials stated that the contract is significant for strengthening its international presence in the testing solutions market.
