The procurement responds directly to an operational requirement and follows extensive collaboration between the RAF and Saab, building on capability enhancements and operational experience developed in recent years. The long-standing relationship has enabled both organizations to rapidly deliver an effective capability against growing counter-UAS demand. The delivery addresses an urgent operational need, allowing the RAF to enhance its situational awareness and response capabilities against aerial threats. This radar system is designed to detect and track a wide range of aerial targets, including small drones. Further integration and training are expected to follow, ensuring the RAF can effectively utilize the Giraffe 1X system as part of its broader air defence strategy.
