Saab introduces Bolide 2 missile for RBS 70 NG air defense system

Swedish defense manufacturer Saab has unveiled the Bolide 2, the latest missile iteration for its RBS 70 short-range air defense system. The company confirmed that the new ammunition is set to become the standard for the RBS 70 NG platform, with initial deliveries expected in 2027.

The Bolide 2 features a larger warhead and improved terminal flight capabilities compared to its predecessors. By adopting a modular architecture, the missile is designed to accommodate future technological upgrades more efficiently, while maintaining the jam-resistant guidance system characteristic of the RBS 70 product line.

Stefan Öberg, head of Saab’s Missile Systems unit, stated that the new missile provides enhanced capabilities against emerging aerial threats. He noted that the system remains compatible with both man-portable configurations and vehicle-mounted firing units, which have become increasingly common in modern defense strategies.

Saab has completed a series of development test firings to validate the system's performance. This update follows a broader trend in the defense sector toward modularizing equipment to extend the lifecycle of existing weapon platforms in response to evolving combat environments.
