Saab launches new Carl-Gustaf anti-tank round
Saab has launched its new anti-tank ammunition round for the Carl-Gustaf weapon system. The new HEAT 758 round is designed to defeat heavy armored vehicles equipped with Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA).
Swedish defense company Saab has launched a new anti-tank ammunition round for its Carl-Gustaf weapon system. The new round, designated HEAT 758, was unveiled during a customer demonstration in Karlskoga, Sweden.
The HEAT 758 is designed to penetrate vehicles protected by Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA), a type of protection increasingly common on battlefields. The round features a tandem warhead; an initial charge neutralizes the external ERA, allowing the main charge to then penetrate the vehicle's main armour. Saab states the round can defeat up to 700mm of armour.
Saab has received an order for the HEAT 758 from an undisclosed customer, and production is underway. The company states the new round is a response to evolving battlefield threats where reactive armour has become a significant challenge for conventional anti-tank munitions.
The HEAT 758 utilizes Saab's Firebolt technology, enabling communication between the munition and the Carl-Gustaf M4 weapon with its Fire Control Device. This is said to simplify the gunner's workload and increase the probability of a first-round hit.
