Itasca, Illinois – Agricultural technology startup Sabanto is equipping existing tractors with autonomous capabilities through retrofit kits. The system allows tractors to perform tasks like plowing, seeding, and weeding independently, targeting a critical labor shortage in the U.S. farming industry.
The technology employs LiDAR sensors and cameras, integrating with a tractor's existing steering and braking systems. Sabanto's kits are designed to be compatible with various tractor makes, including John Deere, and typically require one to two days for installation and calibration.
Founded in 2018 by Craig Rupp, the company seeks to mitigate challenges stemming from rural population decline and difficulties in recruiting farm workers. The agricultural sector has voiced concerns that labor shortages are hindering production and threatening the future of domestic food supply.
Sabanto's autonomous solutions have seen adoption in sectors like sod farming, where repetitive tasks are common. The company has reportedly operated on over 50,000 acres across the United States and Australia. Recent investment, notably from Bayer's venture arm, indicates growing confidence in the company's model for modernizing farm operations.
