Sachsen-Anhalt Election: AfD Wins Most Direct Mandates, CDU Secures None
In the state election in Sachsen-Anhalt, the AfD emerged as the strongest party, winning the majority of direct constituency seats. The CDU failed to secure any direct mandates.
The state election in Sachsen-Anhalt has seen the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party significantly strengthen its position, while the CDU (Christian Democratic Union) suffered a considerable setback, losing almost all direct constituency seats. According to preliminary results, the AfD secured 38 out of the 41 direct mandates. This marks a dramatic shift from the 2021 election, where the CDU won 40 direct seats and the AfD only one. This year, the CDU did not win a single direct mandate, while Die Linke (The Left) secured three seats in Magdeburg and Halle.
The Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW), founded by Sahra Wagenknecht, crossed the five percent threshold to enter the state parliament. Wagenknecht has called for a "political fresh start" and hopes for shifts in energy policy, Russia sanctions, education, and public broadcasting. However, she has ruled out a coalition with the AfD, while not entirely excluding "issue-by-issue cooperation."
The election results have sparked discussions about potential government coalitions. Many users are publicly debating possibilities for inter-party cooperation and the potential dismantling of the "firewall" around the AfD.
