Sachsen-Anhalt plans three new Elbe bridges to replace ferries

Infrastructure Minister Lydia Hüskens unveiled the state’s new road construction plan for 2040, which lists 38 new infrastructure projects. Among these are three bridge crossings designed to replace ferry links at Sandau, Pretzsch, and Ferchland-Grieben. The government aims to stabilize regional connectivity, as current ferry operations frequently face disruptions due to ice, floods, or low water levels.

Minister Hüskens stated that while the projects are officially scheduled, completion is likely two decades away due to the sensitivity of the river ecosystem and associated environmental and nature conservation regulations.

Despite recent reports of tax revenue shortfalls impacting other public investment programs in Sachsen-Anhalt, the government maintains that the 2040 plan remains secure. Hüskens confirmed that planning and implementation for these long-term projects are set to proceed effectively starting in 2027.
