Sage Issues Tax Year-End Calendar and Checklist for South African SMEs
Software firm Sage has released a guide for South African small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) detailing critical deadlines for the 2025/2026 tax year. The guidance highlights increased tax enforcement by SARS.

Software provider Sage has issued a comprehensive guide for South African small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) outlining essential deadlines for the 2025/2026 tax year. The document aims to help businesses avoid penalties amid intensified tax scrutiny.
The South African tax year runs from March 1, 2025, to February 28, 2026. Sage notes that the South African Revenue Service (SARS) has bolstered its compliance efforts, leading to an increase in queries, verifications, and audits targeting SMEs.
The guide covers key tax obligations, including the three payment dates for provisional tax, monthly Pay As You Earn (PAYE) submissions and payments due by the 7th of each month, and the deadlines for employer reconciliations (EMP501) and VAT (VAT201) submissions.
Significant attention is also given to the enhancements of the Employment Tax Incentive (ETI) program, effective from April 2025, which provides benefits for employers hiring younger individuals. Sage also recommends downloading a "payroll tax pocket guide" for in-depth details on legislative updates relevant to payroll and HR professionals.
Adherence to deadlines is presented as the primary defense against financial penalties. Missing even a single deadline can result in substantial fines and interest charges, underscoring the importance of timely compliance as tax authorities tighten their enforcement measures.
