Samsung ends free storage upgrade for Galaxy Z 8 pre-orders

Samsung Electronics is discontinuing the practice of offering a completely free storage upgrade from 256GB to 512GB for pre-orders of its upcoming Galaxy Z 8 foldable smartphones. According to reports from South Korean media outlet ChosunBiz, the company will now split the upgrade cost, with customers paying 50% of the difference and Samsung's MX (Mobile eXperience) division covering the other half.

The initiative, launched in 2023 for flagship Galaxy smartphone pre-orders, provided a significant incentive for loyal customers and was met with positive reception. However, the change comes amid a surge in NAND flash memory prices driven by supply shortages. This has widened the price gap between 256GB and 512GB of UFS storage considerably.

Furthermore, Samsung's MX division has faced risks from rising component costs, making it financially unsustainable to continue absorbing the full cost of the "storage upgrade" promotion. The decision reflects a need to balance customer incentives with the business's profitability in the face of increasing production expenses.

The Galaxy Z 8 series is expected to be announced soon, and this adjustment in pre-order incentives is a significant change for consumers.
