Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8: Foldable Phone Compromises Persist

Samsung released its new Galaxy Z Fold8 foldable smartphone in early August, an attempt to eliminate the compromises of previous foldables and appeal to a broader audience. The new passport-like shape makes the device more pocketable when unfolded and reduces the visibility of the screen crease. Samsung states the device is targeted at video consumption.

However, during a testing period, it became apparent that the new form factor does not eliminate the compromises inherent in foldable phones, but rather introduces new ones. The outer screen is wider and shorter than before, which hinders one-handed use. Additionally, some apps and websites do not function optimally with this aspect ratio.

Previous Samsung models featured a narrower outer screen, which aided one-handed use but was considered awkward. With the wider outer screen, the inner, tablet-sized display became nearly square, making the device more cumbersome to hold and creating thicker black bars around videos.

The Fold8's design is a compromise that reduces black bars on widescreen videos. However, the device cannot be partially folded to act as a stand or for taking selfies, unlike the pricier Fold8 Ultra model. This decision minimizes the screen crease but limits the device's versatility.

Competitors like Google have also faced similar challenges. The initial Google Pixel Fold had a similar form factor to the Fold8, but later models reverted to a narrower design based on user feedback. It remains unclear if the foldable phone market will consolidate around a single form factor.
