Samsung, SK Hynix Test Chinese Chip Equipment Amid US Export Restrictions

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are assessing chip manufacturing equipment from Chinese firm Advanced Micro-Fabrication Equipment (AMEC) for possible deployment at their factories in China. The South Korean memory chip makers are reportedly hedging against the risks posed by tightening U.S. export controls on technology, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Two sources indicated that both companies began testing AMEC's etching equipment approximately two years ago. This period coincided with rising uncertainty over whether the U.S. would continue to permit the import of American chip-making equipment into China.

While these evaluations have not yet led to decisions for larger-scale deployment, they present AMEC with a potential opportunity to gain recognition from leading global chip manufacturers. Broadly, the tests highlight a paradox within U.S. technology control measures: initiatives aimed at curbing China's semiconductor ambitions may inadvertently create openings for Chinese competitors within foreign-owned foundries operating in China.

In a statement to Reuters, Samsung denied testing or considering the use of AMEC equipment at its Chinese factories. SK Hynix declined to comment, and AMEC has not yet responded.

The situation reflects ongoing global tensions in the semiconductor industry, where geopolitical factors significantly influence supply chains and technological development.
