Samsung unveils new folding phones, Galaxy Z Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra
Samsung Electronics launched its new Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra folding smartphones at an event in London. The company stated that folding phones have transitioned from niche products to mainstream devices.

Samsung Electronics unveiled its latest foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, at a Galaxy Unpacked event in London on Wednesday. The company emphasized that after seven generations and millions of users globally, Samsung's foldable phones have become mainstream, moving beyond their initial status as novelties.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, priced at $2,099, is Samsung's thinnest Fold yet at 4.1 millimeters when unfolded. It features a larger battery and an upgraded camera system, including a 200-megapixel main sensor. This model is targeted at users who prioritize productivity and can leverage the expansive display for tasks like spreadsheets.
The $1,899 Galaxy Z Fold8 weighs 7.16 ounces and has a 5.5-inch cover screen. When unfolded, it reveals a 7.6-inch display with an aspect ratio optimized for media consumption. Samsung noted that this model offers improved usability compared to previous, larger devices that required multiple folds.
Both Fold8 models incorporate a new display technology using titanium film and a titanium plate beneath the screen, aimed at enhancing durability and creating a crease-less experience. Despite these advancements, the high price point, hovering around $2,000, remains a significant factor for broader market adoption. Samsung justifies the cost by highlighting the advanced technology and positioning the device as a combination of a smartphone and a tablet.
Samsung faces competition in the foldable market from other manufacturers and anticipates increased attention with Apple's rumored entry into the segment later this year. The company's strategy is to present the Fold8 series as a single device offering both smartphone and tablet functionality.
