San Francisco Mayor Seeks Stricter Rules After Waymo Traffic Incidents

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie is pushing for stricter regulations on autonomous vehicles, requesting state regulators to enhance oversight. This action comes after multiple instances where Waymo's robotaxis caused substantial traffic disruptions within the city.

A significant event occurred on July 4th when numerous Waymo vehicles became immobilized during heavy traffic, blocking key streets for hours. The incident exacerbated existing congestion from holiday events, impacting thousands of residents and commuters.

In a letter to the California Department of Transportation, Mayor Lurie stated that the current regulatory framework is inadequate for managing autonomous vehicles during extraordinary circumstances. He cited a December power outage and the July 4th fireworks event as examples where dozens of Waymo vehicles became stranded, paralyzing traffic flow.

Lurie outlined four "core operational capabilities" that autonomous vehicle manufacturers should demonstrate. He is calling for statewide standards to ensure vehicles can clear active travel lanes during incidents and to require real-time data sharing with local agencies regarding operational disruptions.
